What Is SEO?

Are you familar with SEO?

As I was listening to a webinar about search engine optimization, they got on to the subject of how to take the top ranking on Google’s page.

A few years ago, I was just getting started with SEO. I had little knowledge of what it would take to take the first ranking on page one.

Why wasn’t my website ranking number one on Google? As the webinar progressed, I learned several key insights that changed my perspective on Google and search engine ranking.. forever.

I started with the principles of SEO, learning what it takes to build a quality back link structure, and how to setup my networks of websites and blogs.

The Principles of SEO

How can you notice any significant SEO results, quickly, when it takes months and months for the search engines to even update their algorithms?

Guru Tip #1 Google is increasingly concerned with your inner pages of content than your actual homepage. These pages should be your main points of focus.

Guru Tip #2 Building quality archives, there’s a plethora of content in your older post archives! Do not neglect this gold mine of information!

Guru Tip #3 Keep your posts up to date. Older posts are more important than new posts. At the same time, Google will be checking for relevant up-to-date content.

A majority of bloggers had to make several changes with the releases of the Panda and Penguin Google updates. Take a look at your archives and revamp your old gems!

Don’t use filler, start your website off with great content immediately. Do not start with poorly written or copied content in hopes that it will quickly improve your writing. You will be wasting time, and Google may even penalize you for building a poor blog network.

SEO In 2014

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short, is the study of your target audience. You will need to learn what the audience is looking for, and then using your content, market the best solution to their problem.

First, you will do have to do market research on your chosen niche. Then, start building exclusive content. Now you are ready to use your market research to reach your audience.

SEO is also about the placement of words in your articles. It even comes down to way you type, the structure of your sentences, and how well you are able to use vocabulary. Your final goal should be to solve the target readers problem.

Add your personality, and use your voice, with share targetted stories to reach your audience. Google will surely appreciate the anecdote, and you will be greatly rewarded with an improved search engine ranking :)

If you understand your niche outside and in, then keyword targetting may not be your primary concern. Google will be picking up interest in your blog if the content is good, bottom line. Continue writing as you normally would, and don’t try to write according to the search engines algorithm. In 2014, Google’s biggest changes will be how it chooses to rank websites focusing on white hat SEO, and now those which specifically target old school black hat SEO techniques.

Add value to your users life, this will make them more inclined to share the article. You will need your content to get shared on a regular basis through social media in order to gain the highest quality back-links.
